Water in diesel: mobile contamination support Scotland

Water in diesel can affect fuel-system operation and needs attention. If you know water entered the tank, or a water-in-fuel warning has appeared, record what happened and arrange assessment for the vehicle.

Diesel vehicles can have water-separation equipment, but its presence does not mean contamination can be ignored. The manufacturer’s instructions, warning message, recent fuel history and the condition of the system determine what needs to be checked.

A water-in-fuel warning needs the right response

Tell us the exact message, when it appeared and whether it followed a refill. Follow the vehicle handbook’s safety instructions rather than a generic method for another model. A warning may relate to the filter or separator, and the relevant service procedure is vehicle-specific.

Do not keep driving solely because the engine seems normal. If a known contamination incident has occurred, stop safely and arrange advice. Where the warning has another possible explanation, describe that history too; a full tank drain should not be prescribed from a message alone.

The tank, filter and fuel source

Water can enter at different points in a fuel supply or storage system. Give the recent filling location or storage source, any known cap damage and any evidence of an ingress incident. For equipment, tell us whether a bowser or site tank was used.

Assessment may need to consider the tank contents as well as filtration and separation equipment. Removing fluid from a separator does not by itself establish that the supply is clean or that water cannot return. A continuing source issue needs to be addressed separately.

If the diesel engine has already run

Note how long it operated after the suspected contamination and whether there was poor running, reduced power or a non-start. Those observations help establish what happened, but they are not a reliable measure of internal condition.

Contamination can affect sensitive diesel fuel equipment, so the technician may recommend further checks depending on the findings. Tank draining or filter attention should not be presented as a guarantee that no damage exists.

Large tanks and work equipment

HGVs, plant and stored-fuel applications may require a different response from a small car. Include approximate litres, the number of tanks, source details and whether other equipment was affected. Explain any auxiliary units that share the supply.

Site safety, access and operator authorisation are established before attendance. Large-volume removal, source testing and storage-tank work have their own requirements and are not automatically part of a standard vehicle callout.

Attendance, access and the cost of the work

Contamination enquiries are assessed for the vehicle, fluid, quantity, access and whether the engine has run. AdBlue, water and unknown-fluid work should not be assumed to have the same scope or price as a simple petrol-and-diesel mix.

We cover mainland Scotland and the islands. Arrival estimates are confirmed for the vehicle’s actual location and current availability. Time on site is a separate matter and depends on the work. Neither a coverage page nor an initial enquiry is a promise of a fixed completion time.

Before attendance, identify the person authorised to approve the work. The technician explains the proposed service and confirms the cost before starting. If you intend to use a policy, lease agreement or hire-company process, check its requirements with the provider.

Water in diesel: common questions

Can the fuel filter deal with water by itself?

Some diesel vehicles have separation equipment, but it has limits and maintenance requirements. Follow the handbook and have a warning or known incident assessed.

Can I drain the separator myself?

Procedures differ and involve handling contaminated fuel. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions and use appropriate professional assistance if you are unsure; this page is not a DIY drain procedure.

Will replacing a filter solve the source problem?

Not necessarily. A contaminated tank or supply can introduce water again. The cause and extent should be considered alongside any filter work.

What should a plant operator tell you?

Provide the machine, fuel source, quantity, symptoms, operating history and site access arrangements. Mention other machines supplied from the same tank or bowser.
