Diesel in a petrol car: mobile fuel removal Scotland

Put diesel in a petrol car? Stop filling and keep the engine off. If the vehicle has already been driven, stop in a safe place and explain what happened when arranging help.

A diesel-in-petrol incident needs assessment even when the vehicle initially seems to run. Tell us the amount of diesel added, the petrol already in the tank and whether the engine has been started. We arrange mobile assistance for safe, accessible vehicle locations across Scotland.

What happens when diesel goes into a petrol tank?

A petrol engine is designed for the correct petrol specification, not diesel. If the wrong mixture reaches the engine, it may run unevenly, smoke, lose power, stop or fail to restart. Those signs can also occur for other reasons, so the filling history is important.

Do not keep running the vehicle to see whether it clears. Adding more petrol does not establish that the mixture is suitable, and an additive should not be treated as a substitute for removing the incorrect fuel. Keep the receipt or any container used so the product can be identified.

Before the engine has run

Leave the ignition off. If you are at a filling station, tell a member of staff rather than starting the car to move it away from the pump. They can help manage the forecourt while you arrange assistance.

Provide the registration and the best estimate of the diesel quantity. If the ignition was switched on or a start was attempted, mention it. The technician will decide which parts of the system need attention based on the vehicle and its history, not just whether it has travelled any distance.

If the car is already running badly

Stop safely and switch off. Explain whether the car misfired, showed a warning light, cut out or would not start after the refill. Note the distance travelled and avoid repeated restart attempts while waiting for advice.

The agreed work may include more than emptying the tank where contaminated fuel has circulated. The technician will explain the assessment and whether additional checks are required. Fuel removal cannot rule out a separate fault or promise that all components are unaffected.

What affects the work and cost?

The tank arrangement, quantity of mixed fuel, access to the vehicle and whether it has run affect the job. Location also matters: a driveway, multi-storey car park and roadside position present different access and safety considerations.

Ask for an attendance estimate for your exact location. Price and timing for a straightforward petrol car should not be assumed to apply to every van or commercial vehicle. The work is explained and the cost confirmed before it begins.

Attendance, access and the cost of the work

The quoted cost depends on the vehicle, quantity, access and whether contaminated fuel has circulated. Ask what the proposed work includes and whether further diagnosis or repair may be recommended.

We cover mainland Scotland and the islands. Arrival estimates are confirmed for the vehicle’s actual location and current availability. Time on site is a separate matter and depends on the work. Neither a coverage page nor an initial enquiry is a promise of a fixed completion time.

Before attendance, identify the person authorised to approve the work. The technician explains the proposed service and confirms the cost before starting. If you intend to use a policy, lease agreement or hire-company process, check its requirements with the provider.

Diesel in petrol: common questions

Can diesel get into a petrol car if the nozzle is larger?

Yes, an incorrect fill can still happen, including when fuel is transferred from a container. The question is what entered the tank, not whether the nozzle would normally fit.

Can I drive home and arrange the drain later?

If you know the wrong fuel was added, stop safely and arrange advice. Do not use continued driving as a test of whether the mixture is acceptable.

Does a non-start prove that diesel is the cause?

No. The refuelling history is useful evidence, but a non-start can have other causes. Explain the incident so the vehicle can be assessed properly.

Do you cover petrol vans too?

Provide the registration, fuel type and location. We can discuss the appropriate mobile response; commercial and hire vehicles also need the operator’s authorisation where applicable.
