FUEL DRAIN HELP & INFORMATION

Fuel drain frequently asked questions

Practical answers about wrong fuel, AdBlue, water contamination and arranging a mobile fuel drain in Scotland. For help with your vehicle, call 0333 772 9247.

Wrong fuel: what to do first

I have just put in the wrong fuel. What should I do?

Leave the ignition and engine off if they have not been used. Tell the forecourt staff and call 0333 772 9247 with your location, vehicle and what went into the tank. If you are already driving, stop somewhere safe and switch off.

Should I start the car to move it away from the pump?

Keep the engine off and ask the forecourt staff how the vehicle can be moved safely. Do not start it simply to clear the pump.

What if I have already driven after misfuelling?

Stop safely and switch off. Tell us approximately how far you drove, whether the engine stopped and any warning messages. The engine history affects the assessment and possible further work.

Can I top up with the correct fuel and keep driving?

Do not assume dilution will make the mixture suitable. The amounts, vehicle and fuel system matter. Call before adding more fuel or restarting.

What if I am unsure what went into the tank?

Keep the receipt and any container. Explain what happened and which tank received the fluid. Symptoms alone do not identify the contaminant.

Is every rough-running engine a wrong fuel problem?

No. Stalling, poor starting and warning lights can have other causes. Describe the refuelling history and symptoms so the appropriate assessment can be discussed.

Calling, prices and attendance

How do I arrange a fuel drain?

Call 0333 772 9247. Give your exact location, registration or machine details, the fluid and approximate quantity, and whether the ignition or engine has been used. We discuss availability and the proposed work by telephone.

Can I send an enquiry form or request an online callback?

All enquiries are handled by telephone. Call 0333 772 9247 to discuss the incident, location and availability.

Can I call at night or at the weekend?

We take telephone enquiries 24 hours a day. Call to confirm current availability and the arrangements for your location.

How much does a fuel drain cost?

The quote depends on the vehicle, fluid, quantity, engine history, access and travel. AdBlue, water, commercial vehicles and machinery may need a different scope from a standard petrol-and-diesel mix. Call for a quote for your incident.

Will you explain the price before starting?

The technician explains the proposed work and confirms the cost before starting. Ask what the quote includes and whether further diagnosis, cleaning or repairs may be recommended.

How quickly can you arrive?

Call with your exact location for a current estimate. Availability, distance, traffic, access and ferry travel can affect attendance. Coverage does not mean the same arrival time everywhere.

How long will the work take?

Time on site depends on tank access, quantity, contamination and whether the fuel has circulated. Arrival time and time to complete the work are separate estimates.

Can you guarantee the vehicle will need no repairs?

No. Removing contaminated fuel does not prove every component is undamaged. The incident history and findings may indicate a need for further checks or workshop attention.

Will insurance or breakdown cover pay for the work?

Check with your policy provider. Cover, approval requirements and reimbursement vary. Explain any insurer, leasing or hire-company process before authorising work.

Can you guarantee every vehicle can be completed at the roadside?

No. Safety, access, vehicle condition and the extent of contamination determine what is suitable. Workshop investigation or another recovery arrangement may be necessary.

Scottish coverage and access

Which parts of Scotland do you cover?

Our directory includes all 32 Scottish council areas. Search your town or village in the coverage section, then call with the exact vehicle location to discuss attendance.

Do you cover rural and island locations?

We accept enquiries for mainland and island locations. Travel, ferry arrangements, access and availability must be discussed for the actual location before attendance is agreed.

Do you have a depot in every town listed?

No. The location pages describe mobile coverage. They do not represent a branch, depot or permanently based technician in every town.

Can you come to a petrol station, home or workplace?

We can discuss a visit to a safe, accessible location with permission to work there. Give the forecourt or site name, postcode, entrance details and any restrictions.

What information helps you find a rural vehicle?

Give a precise vehicle position, road or site name, postcode and entrance. Mention gates, private roads, height barriers and limited working space.

What if the vehicle is in an unsafe position?

Tell us where it is and the immediate access problem. Safe vehicle positioning and permission to work must be established before fuel work is agreed.

After a fuel drain

Can I drive away immediately afterwards?

Follow the technician’s advice for the vehicle and findings. Further checks or workshop work may be recommended, particularly if contaminated fuel has circulated.

What should I do if a warning light remains on?

Report the warning and follow the vehicle manufacturer’s instructions. A persistent warning should not be dismissed because the tank has been drained.

Can you deal with more than one affected vehicle?

Call with the number and types of vehicles, their locations and the suspected common supply. Each vehicle and any shared fuel concern need an agreed scope.

Is draining a storage tank the same as draining a vehicle?

No. Bowsers, storage supplies and bulk quantities require a separate discussion about access, volume, permissions and the work required.

Wrong fuel removal

Is wrong fuel removal the same as a fuel drain?

The terms are commonly used for removing the incorrect fuel from a vehicle. The full job may also involve cleaning, flushing, filter attention or further checks, depending on the vehicle and whether it has run.

Can you help without breakdown membership?

You can contact FuelDrain.co.uk directly to discuss a mobile fuel drain. If you plan to use an insurer or breakdown policy, check its terms and authorisation requirements with that provider.

Will draining the tank guarantee the car is fixed?

No. The work required depends on the contamination and whether it circulated. A drain addresses contaminated fuel; damaged components or another mechanical fault may need separate investigation.

What should I have ready?

Your exact location, vehicle registration, fuel type, approximate amount added and whether the ignition or engine has been used. A photograph of the receipt or container can also help.

Read the wrong fuel removal guide.

Fuel doctor

Do I need a fuel doctor if the engine still runs?

If you know the wrong fuel or fluid was added, stop safely and arrange advice even if the vehicle appears to run normally. Normal running does not establish that the mixture is suitable.

Can a fuel doctor identify every engine fault?

No. The service focuses on misfuelling and fuel contamination. An unrelated engine or electrical fault may need a garage or another specialist.

Do you have a branch in every town?

No local branch is implied by a coverage page. This is a mobile service, with attendance arranged for the location of the vehicle.

Can a company arrange assistance for its driver?

Yes. Provide the driver’s location and contact arrangements, vehicle details and the person authorised to agree the work. Fleet, HGV and plant enquiries should include any site or operational restrictions.

Read the fuel doctor guide.

Petrol in diesel

Is a small amount of petrol in diesel safe?

We cannot confirm a safe amount for every engine. Stop filling, keep the engine off and obtain advice for the vehicle and amount involved. Do not top up as a substitute for assessment.

Will the fuel filter remove the petrol?

A fuel filter is not a way to separate a petrol-and-diesel mixture. The mixture needs to be assessed and removed as appropriate rather than driven through the system.

Does the engine need replacing?

Not every incident leads to engine replacement. Equally, a website cannot rule out damage. Whether it ran, the contamination and the technician’s findings determine what further work is needed.

Can you attend a van or HGV?

Tell us the vehicle type, tank quantity and location. Commercial vehicles are assessed and quoted for their own requirements; use our van or HGV service information when arranging assistance.

Read the petrol in diesel guide.

Diesel in petrol

Can diesel get into a petrol car if the nozzle is larger?

Yes, an incorrect fill can still happen, including when fuel is transferred from a container. The question is what entered the tank, not whether the nozzle would normally fit.

Can I drive home and arrange the drain later?

If you know the wrong fuel was added, stop safely and arrange advice. Do not use continued driving as a test of whether the mixture is acceptable.

Does a non-start prove that diesel is the cause?

No. The refuelling history is useful evidence, but a non-start can have other causes. Explain the incident so the vehicle can be assessed properly.

Do you cover petrol vans too?

Provide the registration, fuel type and location. We can discuss the appropriate mobile response; commercial and hire vehicles also need the operator’s authorisation where applicable.

Read the diesel in petrol guide.

Wrong fuel in a van

Can you attend at a customer’s address?

We can discuss attendance there, provided there is permission, safe access and a suitable working position. Tell us the actual address and any parking restrictions.

Do I need permission from the hire company?

Follow the hire company’s terms and incident procedure. Tell us who owns the van and who can approve work, so assistance is arranged on the correct basis.

Is an AdBlue mistake covered by the same procedure?

AdBlue contamination needs its own assessment. Explain whether AdBlue went into the diesel tank, petrol tank or another filler; do not assume a standard mixed-fuel drain is sufficient.

Can you guarantee the van will finish its route?

No. The vehicle must be assessed. We can discuss assistance and likely work, but condition, contamination, access and any damage determine the outcome.

Read the wrong fuel in a van guide.

Fleet fuel drain support

Can the fleet office arrange help remotely?

Yes. Provide a driver contact, exact vehicle location, registration and the person authorised to approve the work. Make sure the driver knows what has been arranged.

Do you offer guaranteed fleet response times?

No response-time guarantee or account arrangement is implied by this page. Availability, travel and the terms of any ongoing support must be discussed and agreed.

What if several vehicles used contaminated fuel?

Prevent further use of the suspect supply and record affected vehicles. Explain the quantities, site and operating history so the scope of assessment can be established.

Can you attend a leased vehicle?

Tell us who owns or leases it and follow the operator’s authorisation process. Any requirements from that provider should be raised before work is agreed.

Read the fleet fuel drain support guide.

HGV fuel draining

Can every HGV be drained at the roadside?

No. Vehicle configuration, fuel volume, position, access and the contamination determine whether mobile attendance is suitable and what equipment is needed.

Should we drain one tank or both?

Do not guess. Explain the tank arrangement and which tank was filled. The technician needs to assess how fuel may have moved through the system.

Does the price start at the same amount as a car?

A standard car starting price should not be applied to an HGV. Commercial tank volume, equipment, access and travel need an individual quote.

What if a refrigerated or auxiliary unit used the same fuel?

Tell us exactly which equipment shares the supply and whether it has operated. That may affect the scope of assessment as well as your operational arrangements.

Read the hgv fuel draining guide.

Plant and machinery fuel draining

Can you deal with hired plant?

Tell us the hire company, machine details and who can authorise work. Follow the owner’s incident procedure and raise any maintenance requirements before attendance is agreed.

Is a generator the same as a road vehicle job?

No. Tank size, equipment operation, installation and site access can change the scope. Describe the generator and how it is fuelled when enquiring.

Can you empty a site bowser as part of a machine drain?

Do not assume this is included. A bowser or storage-tank concern needs its own quantity, access and service-scope discussion.

What if several machines used the same supply?

Stop further use of the suspect source where safe and record the affected assets. Each machine’s operating history and the shared supply need to be considered.

Read the plant and machinery fuel draining guide.

AdBlue contamination and removal

Is AdBlue removal the same as topping up AdBlue?

No. A normal top-up adds the correct product to its dedicated tank. Contamination removal addresses the wrong fluid or contamination and needs a separate assessment.

Will the warning disappear after a drain?

A warning may need diagnosis or further work. Removing a fluid does not prove that the system is fault-free or guarantee that an electronic warning will clear.

Can you remove AdBlue from a petrol tank?

Explain the vehicle and quantity when contacting us. AdBlue in petrol needs assessment in its own right; see our dedicated AdBlue-in-petrol information.

Can I just add more diesel?

No additional product should be used as a substitute for assessing and removing contamination. Leave the vehicle off and arrange advice for the specific incident.

Read the adblue contamination and removal guide.

AdBlue in a diesel tank

What if I only added a little AdBlue?

Do not assume a small quantity is harmless. Keep the vehicle off and provide the amount and vehicle details so the appropriate response can be assessed.

The engine has not started. Is a drain still needed?

The wrong fluid remains in the tank. Arrange assessment before the vehicle is used; finding the mistake early does not remove the contamination by itself.

Is diesel in the AdBlue tank the same problem?

No. That affects a different system. Tell us which fluid went into which filler, and use the general AdBlue contamination information when describing the incident.

Can the vehicle always be fixed on site?

No. What circulated, the vehicle’s condition, required access and manufacturer-specific procedures can make workshop work or further diagnosis necessary.

Read the adblue in a diesel tank guide.

AdBlue in a petrol tank

Is AdBlue a treatment for petrol?

No. It is not a petrol additive and should not be added to a petrol tank. If that has happened, leave the vehicle off and arrange assessment.

Can I remove it by filling the tank with petrol?

Adding more fuel does not remove the contamination. Do not use dilution as a substitute for assessment and appropriate removal.

What if I have already tried to start it?

State how many attempts were made and whether the engine ran. Avoid further attempts while you arrange help so the technician has a clear account of the incident.

Is the service different from diesel in petrol?

Yes. Identify AdBlue explicitly; it needs a different assessment from a mix of petrol and diesel. The required work depends on the vehicle and circulation history.

Read the adblue in a petrol tank guide.

Fuel contamination

Does rough running prove the fuel is contaminated?

No. Similar symptoms can result from other faults. The timing and fuel history are useful information, but the vehicle still needs an appropriate assessment.

Can you identify an unknown liquid by its colour?

Colour or smell alone should not be relied on. Keep any container or receipt and explain the circumstances; further identification or testing may be needed.

Can you clean a bulk storage tank?

Discuss that as a separate enquiry. Storage capacity, fuel type, access and the required service are different from a routine vehicle fuel drain.

What if more than one machine is affected?

Record the assets, source used and operating history, and stop further use of a suspect supply where safe. A shared-source issue needs a broader scope of assessment.

Read the fuel contamination guide.

Water contamination in fuel

Can an additive remove all water contamination?

Do not assume a treatment is suitable for your engine or will resolve the source. Obtain advice for the fuel, vehicle and contamination before adding another product.

Does a water-in-fuel light mean the tank needs draining?

The warning needs attention under the manufacturer’s instructions. The appropriate work depends on the vehicle and findings; do not infer the entire job from the warning alone.

Can condensation be the only possible cause?

No. Storage, ingress and supply history may all be relevant. The source needs assessment rather than an assumption based on weather or vehicle age.

Can you help with stored-fuel enquiries?

Describe the tank or container, quantity, fuel and location. Storage-system work is scoped separately from an ordinary vehicle drain.

Read the water contamination in fuel guide.

Water in diesel

Can the fuel filter deal with water by itself?

Some diesel vehicles have separation equipment, but it has limits and maintenance requirements. Follow the handbook and have a warning or known incident assessed.

Can I drain the separator myself?

Procedures differ and involve handling contaminated fuel. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions and use appropriate professional assistance if you are unsure; this page is not a DIY drain procedure.

Will replacing a filter solve the source problem?

Not necessarily. A contaminated tank or supply can introduce water again. The cause and extent should be considered alongside any filter work.

What should a plant operator tell you?

Provide the machine, fuel source, quantity, symptoms, operating history and site access arrangements. Mention other machines supplied from the same tank or bowser.

Read the water in diesel guide.

Water in petrol

Can I tell that petrol contains water just by looking at it?

Do not rely on appearance alone or handle fuel to carry out an improvised test. Explain the incident and retain information about the source; further assessment may be needed.

Should I top the tank up with fresh petrol?

Adding more fuel does not establish that the existing contents are suitable. Arrange advice for the known or suspected contamination before adding another product.

Is water in petrol the same as diesel in petrol?

No. They are different contaminants. Tell us which is known or suspected, and explain the evidence so the appropriate response can be arranged.

Can a drain guarantee the warning light clears?

No. A warning may relate to another fault or require further checks. The vehicle needs assessment rather than a promise based on the tank contents alone.
